What to Wear to a Miami Boudoir Photography Session: A Photographer's Guide

One of the first questions almost every woman asks me after booking a boudoir session is:
“What am I supposed to wear?”
And honestly, I completely understand why that question comes up so often. Most women don’t spend their everyday lives thinking about lingerie, posing, or what will photograph beautifully. Many women have never even shopped for lingerie before, and the idea of choosing outfits for a boudoir photography session can feel overwhelming.
The good news is you do not have to have it all figured out before you come to the studio.
As a Miami boudoir photographer, my job is not only to take beautiful photos. A huge part of my job is helping you feel comfortable, confident, and excited about the experience from the moment you walk through the door.
The outfit is only one small piece of the entire experience. The real focus is you.
Start With What Makes You Feel Beautiful
Before we even talk about outfits, I always remind my clients that a boudoir session is about celebrating who you are.
Many women come in feeling nervous. One of the most common things I hear is:
“I’m nervous, but I’m excited.”
And honestly, that is probably true for about 99% of the women I photograph.
We are often our own biggest critics. We stand in front of the mirror and immediately notice the things we don’t love about ourselves. We are so much harder on ourselves than we would ever be on someone else.
During a boudoir session, everything changes.
With flattering posing, lighting, angles, and guidance throughout the session, we focus on highlighting the parts of yourself that you love. Many women end up seeing themselves in a way they never have before.
That’s why I always tell my clients: choose outfits that make you feel confident, beautiful, and like yourself.
You Don’t Need to Know How to Shop for Lingerie
Some clients arrive with a suitcase full of outfits. Others arrive saying:
“I have no idea where to start.”
Both are completely normal.
To help make the process easier, I provide every client with a boudoir preparation guide before their session. This includes outfit ideas, inspiration, and different options to help you start thinking about what feels right for you.

My Favorite Boudoir Outfit Ideas That Photograph Beautifully
After photographing hundreds of women, I’ve learned that the best outfits are not necessarily the most expensive or complicated ones. They are the ones that make you feel good and allow you to move naturally.
Here are some of my favorite options:
1. Bodysuits
If I had to choose one outfit that looks amazing on almost everyone, it would be a bodysuit.
A bodysuit creates beautiful lines, photographs beautifully, and is something many women feel comfortable wearing. It is a great choice whether you are experienced with boudoir photography or this is your very first session.
2. Robes
A robe is one of my favorite ways to start a session, especially for women who are feeling nervous.
It gives you something to do with your hands, allows you to ease into the experience, and creates beautiful images while still feeling comfortable and covered.
Many clients start with something like a robe and, as their confidence grows throughout the session, they become more comfortable trying different looks.
3. Everyday Pieces
Boudoir does not always have to mean traditional lingerie.
A simple white button-down shirt, sweater, tank top, or oversized shirt can create some of the most beautiful and timeless images.
There is something really beautiful about a more natural, “girl next door” look. It feels authentic and personal.
4. A Sheet or Implied Nude Style
A sheet is not technically an outfit, but it can create some of the most timeless boudoir images.
It gives you the ability to show as much or as little as you feel comfortable with while creating a soft, elegant look.
5. A Beautiful Bra and Panty Set
A simple matching set can be absolutely stunning.
You do not have to spend hundreds of dollars on lingerie. You can find beautiful options at many different price points, including places like Target, Walmart, Amazon, or higher-end lingerie stores.
The most important thing is the fit, not the price tag.
The Biggest Mistakes Women Make When Choosing Outfits
Choosing the Wrong Size
The number one mistake I see is choosing something that does not fit properly.
If something is extremely too small or too big, it will show in photos and may make you uncomfortable during the session.
Now, if something is just slightly too big or slightly too small, that is usually not a problem. With posing, movement, and the way we photograph the outfit, small differences are often not noticeable.
But if an outfit truly does not fit your body, it can affect how comfortable and confident you feel and that is what matters most.
Staying Too Far Inside Your Comfort Zone
Your comfort level is always important. I will never pressure someone into wearing something they do not feel good in.
However, I do encourage clients to consider stepping slightly outside of their normal comfort zone.
Many women book a boudoir session because they want to do something empowering for themselves. Sometimes the outfit that feels a little intimidating at first ends up becoming their favorite.
I recently had a client who described herself as very shy and conservative. She brought one outfit that was very comfortable for her and another that was a little more daring.
After talking through her options, she decided to try the second outfit.
After seeing her photos, she told me she was so glad she pushed herself outside her comfort zone because she loved the results.
Making the Session About Someone Else
A boudoir session is about you.
Sometimes clients want to include things like a boyfriend’s favorite sports jersey, a hobby, or something meaningful to someone else. And I absolutely love personal touches.
But I always remind my clients: this is your experience.
We can absolutely include a few fun photos with those personal items, but the majority of your session should celebrate you, your personality, your confidence, and your beauty.
Colors and Textures That Photograph Beautifully
There is no one perfect color for boudoir photography because every woman is different, but there are some colors and textures that consistently photograph beautifully.
Black is always a classic choice. It is timeless, elegant, and flattering.
Jewel tones are also stunning, especially colors like:
Deep red
Emerald green
Teal blue
Burgundy
My personal favorite might be red. It is not necessarily a color everyone reaches for in everyday clothing, but in photographs, it is incredible. It is bold, confident, and looks beautiful on all skin tones.
White is another beautiful option, especially for bridal boudoir or anniversary sessions.
For textures, I love:
Lace
Strappy details
Two-tone pieces with nude and black
Delicate details that add dimension
One style I personally find more challenging is very structured corsets or bustiers. They can be beautiful, but they are often stiff and can limit movement during posing. Boudoir photography is about natural movement and beautiful curves, so flexibility is important.
How We Choose Your Outfits During Your Session
Before we start photographing, we sit down together and create a plan.
After hair and makeup is complete, clients usually love showing me everything they brought. We look through their outfits, explore the client closet, and decide what will work best.
Most clients choose between two and four different looks during a typical session.
We also consider the different areas of the studio. Different outfits create different feelings.
Maybe one look feels:
Romantic
Soft
Playful
Sexy
More daring
We create a variety so your final gallery feels like a complete experience and shows different sides of your personality.
My Biggest Advice: Don’t Overthink It
If I could give every woman one piece of advice before her boudoir session, it would be this:
Don’t overthink it.
The photos are about you, not just what you are wearing.
I guarantee we can create a beautiful, sexy image whether you are wearing lingerie, a simple shirt, or something in between.
The purpose of a Miami boudoir photography session is not to become someone else. It is about seeing yourself in a new way, celebrating yourself, and having an experience you will never forget.
My favorite part of what I do is watching that transformation happen.
Women walk in nervous but excited, and by the end of the session, they are laughing, smiling, and saying:
“I can’t believe that’s me.”
And honestly, that is the best compliment I could receive.

That's completely normal—and honestly, I expect it! Almost every woman who walks into my Miami studio tells me she's nervous because she's never done anything like this before. I'll guide you through every pose from head to toe, show you the back of the camera throughout your session, and help you look and feel your absolute best.
What if I don't feel comfortable wearing lingerie?
Boudoir doesn't have to mean lingerie. Some of my favorite images have been created with an oversized button-down shirt, a cozy sweater, a robe, or even wrapped in a simple white sheet. Your session should reflect your personality and comfort level, and we'll choose outfits together that make you feel confident.
How many outfits should I bring?
Most clients wear between two and four different outfits during their session. Bring a variety if you can, and don't worry if you're unsure what works best—we'll go through everything together before we start photographing and create a plan that fits your style and the different sets in the studio.
What if I don't love my body?
This is probably the biggest concern I hear, and I want you to know you're not alone. Almost every woman has something she's self-conscious about. My job isn't to change your body—it's to photograph you in the most flattering way possible using posing, lighting, angles, and years of experience. You might be surprised by just how beautiful you already are.
Is there a client closet I can use?

What if I'm nervous?
